Language
Spanish control of Mexico led to the dominance of the Spanish language , thus the majority of Mexicans today speak Spanish- making it the largest Spanish-speaking population in the world. The colonizers of Mexico forced the Spanish language on the natives. There are other languages not native to Mexico that are spoken in the country, the most common being English. As many as 100 Native American languages are still spoken in Mexico, but not one alternative language is used more than Spanish, these include: Aztec (or Nahuatl) and the Mayan's language. Eighty percent of Mexicans who speak a native language also speak Spanish. Six percent of the population do not speak Spanish. Some native Mexican words have even become common in other languages, including English, for example: Tomato, chocolate, coyote, and avocado all originated from Nahuatl.
